Plastic is everywhere, even our most “pristine” places. New research is showing that even the wildest refuges in the West, such Rocky Mountain National Park, are being blanketed by wind-driven plastic dust and plastic rain.
The problem with plastic is two fold. First, many plastics break down extremely slowly, meaning they will remain in the environment for centuries, if not millennia. Second, the full extent of the harmful effects of plastics is unknown, although many are potentially carcinogenic while others are endocrine disruptors. Regardless, no one believes bombarding the environment with these materials will be good for nature, or for us.
